ഗ്രന്ഥാലയശാസ്ത്രം
ഡ്യൂയി ഡെസിമൽ വർഗ്ഗീകരണം
ഗ്രന്ഥശാലാശാസ്ത്രത്തിൽ ഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങളെ അവയുടെ വിഷയസ്വഭാവമനുസരിച്ച് വിവിധ വിഭാഗങ്ങളായി വർഗ്ഗീകരിക്കുന്നതിനു വേണ്ടി അന്താരാഷ്ട്രതലത്തിൽ അംഗീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ട ഒരു വർഗ്ഗീകരണസമ്പ്രദായമാണു് ഡ്യൂയി ഡെസിമൽ വർഗ്ഗീകരണം (Dewey Decimal Classification) അഥവാ ഡി.ഡി.സി. 1876-ൽ മെൽവിൽ ഡ്യൂയി ആവിഷ്കരിച്ചു പ്രചാരത്തിൽ വരുത്തിയതാണു് ഈ സംവിധാനം. ലോകമെമ്പാടും 135 രാഷ്ട്രങ്ങളിലായി രണ്ടു ലക്ഷത്തിലേറെ ഗ്രന്ഥശാലകളിൽ ഈ സമ്പ്രദായം ഉപയോഗിച്ചുവരുന്നു. തുടക്കം മുതൽ ഇന്നുവരെ 23 പ്രധാന പതിപ്പുകളിലൂടെ ഈ വർഗ്ഗീകരണമാനകം കാലാകാലമായി പരിഷ്കരിക്കപ്പെട്ടു വന്നിട്ടുണ്ടു്. ഏറ്റവും ഒടുവിലെ പതിപ്പ് 2011-ൽ പുറത്തിറങ്ങി.
ഗ്രന്ഥശാലകളിൽ ഓരോ പുസ്തകത്തിനും ലൈബ്രേറിയൻ ഒരു പ്രത്യേക ഡ്യൂയി ദശാംശസംഖ്യ (DDC Number)നൽകുകയും ആ സംഖ്യയ്ക്കു് അലമാരകളിൽ പ്രത്യേകം നീക്കിവെച്ചിട്ടുള്ള സ്ഥാനത്തു് പുസ്തകം സൂക്ഷിച്ചുവെക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. ഇപ്രകാരം ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ ഗ്രന്ഥം പെട്ടെന്നു കണ്ടെത്തുവാനും അതിനു തക്ക സ്ഥലത്തുതന്നെ തിരിച്ചുവെക്കാനും എളുപ്പമാവുന്നു.

വിഷയസ്വഭാവമനുസരിച്ച് പത്തു വർഗ്ഗങ്ങളും (Classes) അതിലോരോന്നിലും പത്തു വിഭാഗങ്ങളും (Divisions) അവയ്ക്കുള്ളിൽ തന്നെ പത്തു് ഉപവിഭാഗങ്ങളും (Sections) ആയി തരം തിരിക്കാവുന്ന വിധത്തിലാണു് ഡി.ഡി.സി. വിഭാവനം ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നതു്. ഇവയിൽ ചില വിഭാഗങ്ങൾ ഇപ്പോൾ ആവശ്യമില്ലാത്തതോ ഇതുവരെ ഉപയോഗപ്പെടുത്താത്തതോ ആയതിനാൽ യഥാർത്ഥത്തിൽ 99 ഡിവിഷനുകളും 908 സെൿഷനുകളും മാത്രമാണു് നിലവിൽ ഉള്ളതു്.
പ്രധാന വിഷയം ഒരു പൂർണ്ണസംഖ്യയാണെങ്കിലും ഉപവിഷയമോ സഹവിഷയമോ ആയി മറ്റൊരെണ്ണം കൂടി വരികയാണെങ്കിൽ അവയുടെ സൂചന കൂടി ഉൾപ്പെടുവാൻ കൃത്യമായ ഒരു ദശാംശസംഖ്യ കൂടി ചേർക്കുക എന്ന രീതിയാണു് ഡി.ഡി.സി.യിൽ അവലംബിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നതു്. അതിനാലാണു് ദശാംശവർഗ്ഗീകരണം എന്ന പേരിൽ ഇതറിയപ്പെടുന്നതു്. ഉദാഹരണത്തിനു് യൂറോപ്യൻ ധനത്തത്വശാസ്ത്രത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ഒരു പുസ്തകത്തിനു് 330.94 എന്ന വർഗ്ഗമാണു ചേരുക(ധനതത്വശാസ്ത്രം => 330; ഭൂവിഭാഗം എന്ന സ്വഭാവത്തിനു് 0.9; യൂറോപ്പ് എന്ന സ്ഥലത്തിനു് 0.04; മൊത്തം 330+0.9+0.04 = 330.94). ഇതുപോലെ ഒരു അമേരിക്കൻ(973) മാസിക(0.05)യ്ക്കു് 973.05 എന്ന സംഖ്യ ആയിരിക്കും ലഭിക്കുക.
പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ ചിട്ടപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നതു് അവയുടെ വർഗ്ഗീകരണസംഖ്യയുടെ ആരോഹണക്രമത്തിലായിരിക്കും. തുടർന്നും, രണ്ടോ അതിലധികമോ പുസ്തകങ്ങൾക്കു് ഒരേ സംഖ്യ ലഭിക്കുന്നുവെങ്കിൽ, അക്ഷരമാലാക്രമത്തിൽ അവയെ വീണ്ടും വിഭാഗീകരിക്കുന്നു. ലേഖകന്റെ അവസാനപേരിന്റെ ആദ്യത്തെ ഒന്നോ രണ്ടോ അക്ഷരങ്ങൾ ആണു് സാധാരണ ഇതിനുപയോഗിക്കുന്നതു്. കൃത്യമായി ഒരു ലേഖകനെ സൂചിപ്പിക്കാനാവാത്ത സാഹചര്യമുണ്ടെങ്കിൽ പുസ്തകത്തിന്റെ പേരു തന്നെ ഇതിനുപയോഗപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു.
ഒരു പ്രത്യേക ഡി.ഡി.സി. കാറ്റലോഗ് സംവിധാനം ഉപയോഗപ്പെടുത്തുമ്പോഴും അതേ ഗ്രന്ഥശാലയിലെ പുസ്തകസഞ്ചയത്തെ വ്യത്യസ്തരൂപങ്ങളിലുള്ള പട്ടികകളിലായി അലമാരകളിൽ സൂക്ഷിക്കുവാനോ അടുക്കുവാനോ ഉള്ള സൗകര്യം ഈ സമ്പ്രദായം നൽകുന്നുണ്ടു്. അതുകൊണ്ടു് പ്രത്യക്ഷത്തിൽ ഒരേ സ്വഭാവമുള്ള രണ്ടു പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ (ഉദാഹരണത്തിനു് കേരളത്തിലെ വാസ്തുവിദ്യ;കേരളത്തിന്റെ ഭൂമിശാസ്ത്രം) പരസ്പരം അകന്നുമാറി രണ്ടിടങ്ങളിൽ സൂക്ഷിക്കപ്പെട്ടു എന്നു വരാം.

ഡി.ഡി.സി. സമ്പ്രദായം മറ്റു പല തരം ഗ്രന്ഥവർഗ്ഗീകരണരീതികൾക്കും പ്രചോദനവും മാതൃകയുമാവുകയുണ്ടായി. സങ്കീർണ്ണമെങ്കിലും കൂടുതൽ വ്യാപകമായി ഉപയോഗിക്കാവുന്ന യു.ഡി.സി. എന്ന സാർവ്വജനീന ദശാംശവർഗ്ഗീകരണം (Universal Decimal Classification UDC)ആണു് ഇതിൽ ഏറ്റവും പ്രധാനമായതു്. സംഖ്യകൾക്കും അക്ഷരങ്ങൾക്കും പുറമേ അർദ്ധവിരാമം, കോഷ്ഠങ്ങൾ തുടങ്ങിയ ചില ചിഹ്നങ്ങൾ കൂടി ഉൾപ്പെട്ടതാണു് യു.ഡി.സി.കൊറിയ, ചൈന , ജപ്പാൻ തുടങ്ങിയ രാഷ്ട്രങ്ങൾ ഡി.ഡി.സി.യെ പിൻപറ്റി തനതായ വർഗ്ഗീകരണനിലവാരങ്ങൾ ആവിഷ്കരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടു്.
